Play Therapy Program

The Play Therapist is a specially qualified and certified mental health professional who helps children and youth experiencing difficulty with their behaviour or emotions at home and school, aggression, family issues, trauma, domestic violence, abuse, neglect, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, ADHA, Autism, developmental delay, self harm.

Our Play Therapists are Certified with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy following intensive education, training and evaluation of their clinical skills through ongoing supervision.

Services provided include the following:

o   Initial Assessment and ongoing Progress Reporting

o   Individual therapy sessions support the child in resolving psychosocial difficulties, increasing capacity and confidence, and achieving optimal growth and development

o   Parent Coaching Sessions are provided regularly, as needed.

  • Children and youth to 18 years

FUNDING

  • The Play Therapy Program is a fee for service program eligible for reimbursement through many employee benefits programs.

FAQs

  • Play Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that is used when counselling children and youth. It provides children with opportunities to express themselves in a safe, playful, and developmentally-appropriate manner. All learning, exploring, and feeling is done through play with a Certified and Licensed Clinician.

  • Yes. NCDC has 4 Certified Play Therapists. Our Play Therapists have training and Certification through the Canadian Association for Play Therapy.

  • The frequency and duration of sessions is dependent on the presenting concern, finances/insurance, and progress of the individual child and family. Sessions typically start with weekly or biweekly, and eventually become less frequent.

  • Most insurance companies cover psychotherapy/counselling if they have mental health allocation. Each insurance company is different. Our staff are licensed professionals - both Registered Social Workers and Registered Psychotherapists. Please connect directly with your insurance company to see if they cover these services/professionals.

  • On occasion, we hold a short waitlist. Please contact our Centre directly to inquire on active waitlist times.
